A dragon’s philosophy

As you might have guessed, it’s really all about the wings. Think about all the flying creatures you know. Are there any of them that choose not to fly? There are flightless birds with wings, but it’s not by choice. They try desperately to take to the air when they run, flapping their poor wings for all they’re worth. It’s heart-wrenching. But my point is that there is nothing out there that can fly, and chooses not to fly.

You humans are no exception. You’ve invented all kinds of ways to make up for your wingless state. Hang-gliders, parachutes, aeroplanes, helicopters, balloons, blimps, rockets, jet-packs. You’re always looking for new ways to get off the ground. You dream of levitation and anti-gravity machines.

There’s a reason for all this seeking after flight. Being above the ground looking down on it all gives the winged a perspective that ground-huggers cannot achieve. It gives everything below a distance, so it’s not all personal. And it lets you see how everything is all connected. After all, sooner or later you have to come down again and join it. Flying helps you find your place in the middle of it all, without getting tangled up in it while you do.

Everybody should fly. The world would be a much better place.
